Julio Saenz from La Rioja Alta, Spain - SOLD OUT
24 May 2017

La Rioja Alta’s history dates back to 1890, when five vine growers based in the Haro region of Rioja, created a Sociedad Vinicola which later became known as La Rioja Alta. The founders enthusiastically shared the dream of making and ageing top-quality Rioja wines. The region, with a winemaking tradition dating back thousands of years, also benefited from the arrival of the French winemakers in the late 19th century, who had been affected by the devastating phylloxera.

The Estate has two wineries: the Haro winery is the original, traditional wine making facility and is now primarily used for ageing the wines; and the second winery in Labastida was built in 1996 and is a state-of-the-art modern winemaking facility.

The vineyards are located in the finest sites of the Rioja Alta area and 360 hectares of limestone soil are planted with Tempranillo and Graciano vines. In addition, La Rioja Alta also owns a separate 63-hectare estate located in the hotter Rioja Baja region specifically for the cultivation of a small quantity of Garnacha, which is used in the Ardanza blend.

The Estate produces 3 Reservas and 2 Gran Reservas, under the supervision of the passionate winemaker, Julio Sáenz who joined La Rioja Alta in 1996.

Meet Julio Sáenz from La Rioja Alta in our Wine Shop on Wednesday 24th May, when he hosts a tasting of La Rioja Alta wines dating back to the acclaimed Viña Ardanza Reserva 1987.
